Got a letter from Chrysler today that said I need to bring in the JK for a reprogram of the Cabin Compartment Node as part of a Recall.
Seems if you are wheeling or driving real slow for a long period of time the automatic transmission could overheat, overboil into the engine compartment and catch fire.
This may have been the cause for the alarms I was getting in Uwharrie last weekend. So I guess I will have to take it in. It says if it does overheat to just let it idle in Neutral and this will aleviate the problem.
Sounds like I need to get a Fire Extinguisher and maybe a bigger transmission cooler. _________________ Tim

Did you ever get the recall done, and did it fix the issue? That concerned me since I was at one point going to look at a new JK 2door Rubi but wanted an auto trans. After seeing your issue that stopped me and made me rethink keeping my ole YJ a bit longer. _________________ Beefalo The Other Red Meat.

I took my JK to the dealer and they reprogrammed the ECM and now when I trail ride the transmission will overheat and an error will display 'HOT OIL'. If you keep driving the vehicle it will turn on the electric fan which then cools the whole engine, after the audible ding goes off for about 20min.
I think that adding an engine and transmission skid plate has added to this problem immensly mainly because the big steel plate retains heat. No solution for that except to add a secondary transmission cooler with its own fan that will cool the transmission.
I also keep getting BAS and ESP warning lights. Not sure about them but I think there is a recall on the braking system as well so I will have to go back to the dealer again. _________________ Tim

i sent a note to a JK person here is what they said
Re: can ya help a jeeper out
yeah... mines been in for that recall already.. they just had another one posted a couple days ago too... A lot of guys are adding transmission coolers to help with the problem... actually they added transmission coolers before there was a problem either because they new it was getting hot, or they were pulling a trailer... better safe than sorry. So far I havent even seen that light.
Also.. as far as his ESP / BAS lights ask him if his steering wheel is off center. Any more than 10* I think and it will shut off the ESP/BAS and give you the lights. _________________ 03 Wrangler 4cyl 5sp Red w/2"bb, discos, aussie front locker, 32x11.5 tsl/sx

I have been looking at this cooler for awhile. I think I am going to order it this weekend.

The only thing holding me back was I wasn't sure how to wire it. I have see the dash switch units Daystar makes but I am not sure about running 12v into the dash. Any Ideas?
They make a switch pod for the JK Rubicon. I am trying to figure out if I can use this to actuate the fan on the cooler.

Run it thru a relay and then into the dash. _________________

Found some more information. Seems the heat sink type cooler is crap. I need to use a pan style cooler and won't need a fan. I thought there was a seperate transmission cooler but seems the trans cooler is part of the AC condenser. Not very effective when running trails with the top and AC off. Especiall when the stock fan doesn't turn unless the AC is on.
Solution. - Install the cooler in this write up and be done.

Well Bob,
I think thier definition of a Trail is some what skewed. Anytime a Jeep doesn't have adequate skid plates isn't trail rated, especially on the long wheel base 4 doors.
I will say that I never had an overheating problems in Kentucky but then it was fairly cold up there.
I guess they are trail rated compared to all the other 4 wheel drive vehicles out there. I don't see any Subarus, Rav4s or any unmodified vehicles other than Jeeps doing what I have done in my JK.

JK is in the shop for the Transmission overheating problem plus and ESP/BAS/ABS problem. Not sure what is ailing it but the tranny fluid was a bit brown when I took it in.
Knowing them they will probably want me to pay for a whole new Jeep. We will see.
Does anyone know the number to the Regional Chrysler Rep. I may need his number when this is all over and done with. _________________ Tim

Service Rep sez, "Hey there, whats them side runner things ya got there where the steps used to be?"
Tim proudly replies, "Those are Rock Rails, I put them on myself for when I go off roading!"
Service Rep the says, "Humm, think I can smell water in those axles, you've been off roadin Boy! We don't give no warrenty for that!"
While Tim stands there staring in dis-belief, the Service Rep follows up with, "I thought so, see that window banner, yep, another Jeep has bit the dust! What's ya name boy, Frank?"
Sorry to hear of your trouble Tim. Hope the not so funny humor helps some. _________________

You a funny man Bob. And no I didn't put them on myself...I remember someone helping me under the glow of offroad lights. I love those rock rails and so do most people who see them.
You know if you expect the worse you will never be disappointed. So with that said I am preparing for the WAR part of "Warranty".
So far they have been good with it and haven't charged me anything. The first time was for the Transmission overheat recall. Which I don't think they fixed with an indicator light that says "HotOil". Mainly because the damage is already done once that light comes on.
The other was a death wobble problem that they fixed with a new steering dampner and brace.
All I can do now is wait for their assessment. _________________ Tim
